Accuplacer/Assessment

Most students are required to go through assessment testing as part of the admission process. You can expect to be assessed if you meet one of the following criteria:

  • Working on a degree and/or certificate
  • Planning to take math or English classes
  • Planning to take a class that has a math or English pre-requisite – meaning you must either take a specific math or English class, or test at a certain level before you can register for the class.

At Edmonds Community College we generally use the ACCUPLACER test as our assessment tool. ACCUPLACER will assess your writing, reading and math skills, and make a determination, in conjunction with an advisor, as to which class/es you should start with.

If English is your second language, you may take a different version of the ACCUPLACER called LOEP. Be sure to tell the Testing Center if you need to take the LOEP Assessment.

How to Sign up for Assessment Testing

  • Complete and submit the Admission application.
  • Once you have your Student ID Number, obtain the Testing Center ACCUPLACER Referral form at the Enrollment Services counter.
  • Take the form to the Cashier’s Office to pay the Admission fee – if you previously paid the fee, the Testing Center can verify payment, otherwise take your receipt to the Testing Center.

Assessment Exceptions

You may not need to go through all or part of the assessment process under the following conditions:

  • You completed English Composition and/or Intermediate Algebra at an accredited college or university, within the past five years, and with a grade of 2.0 or higher. Submit an unofficial transcript to the Enrollment Services counter.
  • You previously earned a Bachelor of Arts, or Bachelor of Science degree from an accredited college or university.
  • You previously earned an Associate of Arts, or Associate of Science degree from a Washington State Community or Technical College. Submit an unofficial copy of your transcript.
  • You previously took ACCUPLACER within the past two years at another college. Submit a copy of your scores to the Enrollment Services counter.
  • Under some circumstances we accept Compass and Asset assessment scores. If you previously took either of these tests in the past two years, bring a copy of your scores to the Enrollment Services counter to see if you are exempt from ACCUPLACER.

Preparing for the ACCUPLACER test

  • The Testing Center is located on the first floor of Mountlake Terrace Hall, room 152. Visit their webpage for up to date information regarding hours.
  • You do not need to make an appointment to take the ACCUPLACER or LOEP tests. The test is not timed, but you should allow at least two hours to complete both the English and Math portions of the test.
  • Bring government issued photo ID when you arrive at the Testing Center.
  • Click here for a sample of the test questions.

Retaking the ACCUPLACER test

  • If you wish to re-test for a better score, you may do so, but there is a re-test fee, and some limits apply. Check with an advisor or the Enrollment Services Office for more information. If approved, pay the re-test fee at the Cashier’s Office.
  • Test scores are good for two years. If you do not start taking math or English classes within two years, you must re-test.
  • Once you have taken a math class, English 100, or tested into English 100, you cannot re-test in that area for a higher placement. You must follow the logical progression of classes until you reach your desired level.

EdMail: You are required to use it! It is the way we communicate with you.

The college assigns all students EdMail (email) accounts within a couple of days after you register for your first class. Note: if you are a former student returning after time away from school, check with the Enrollment Services Office to confirm what email address we have on file for you. We use the address recorded in the Enrollment Services records. To gain access to your account, follow the steps at www.edcc.edu/edmail.
